It is probably the obvious choice, but for me there's not even any contest. I had to read P&P in Year 11 English Lit, and the best way to appreciate a work of art and culture is to study it.
I suppose it also helps that the 2005 film adaptation was spectacular. The scenes were so picturesque that it's now exactly how I envision Regency England.
Jane Austen's writing is beautifully emphatic in a unique way, and that alone I think is what drives the story, the characters, and the circumstances of the novel. It's styled and fashioned with emotively fleshed out words, and it is in this method that feelings are evoked so intensely.
There's a poignancy and a potency about Pride & Prejudice that clearly makes it Austen's most renowned work. It's the characters - Elizabeth and Darcy, the Bennett family, Mr Bingley - their entire personages and the presentation of them that is so striking. The morals Elizabeth invokes, the values she holds true to -
her respiration is our aspiration.
